Hugh Town Memorial Builder Award 2026

The purpose of the Hugh Town Memorial Builder Award is to recognize volunteers who have made significant and exemplary contributions to the Outrigger Canoe Racing Discipline of Canadian Outrigger Racing Association (“CORA”) within Canada in the Builder Category.

The CORA Board has approved Policy and Procedure relating to selection and awarding and administering the Award as per the Hugh Town Memorial Builder Award Policy.

The Hugh Town Memorial Builder Award has traditionally been awarded after the CORA AGM. In 2026, the CORA Awards Committee opted for an “Early Call” for nominations as of 2026-Aug-31, given the pressing workload on CORA Board Members leading into the CORA Annual General Meeting (AGM). The CORA Awards Committee has reviewed nominations received for the past season and has recognized Wendy Rae-Perkins of Wai Nui O Kanaka as the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Hugh Town Memorial Builder Award.

“Auntie” Wendy Rae-Perkins is a builder / pioneer / activist who has dedicated a lifetime to the paddling community and countless noble causes. Wendy has been Commodore of Wai Nui O Kanaka since 2007 and has made significant contributions to the Eastern Canada paddling community. Her Early Career, Outrigger Canoeing Achievements, Coach-Builder Achievements, Pioneering Achievements, and Exemplary Achievements are highlighted in her 2022 Canadian Outrigger Hall Of Fame Bio. She has been with Wai Nui, the first outrigger canoe club in Ontario, since 2003, five years after its inception, and has worked continuously to grow participation in every paddlesport for youths, seniors, and adaptive paddlers. Her contributions to support paddlesports in general and outrigger canoe racing in particular at the international, national, provincial, and club level have been recognized by clubs and paddlers all across Eastern Canada.

FGPC Wetdashe 2026 – 16th Anniversary Fundraising Race for Men’s Health

Wetdashe 2026 IS A “DRY” CHANGE RACE, which means 6-person crews change crews on the docks with their team mates at the end of each 3km lap. Both “Spec” & “Ultralight” outrigger canoe options are available. FGPC’s fleet of outriggers is supplied to all registered teams. Ultralight requests are alloted to 48km racers and will be considered based on experience and proficiency with ultralight canoes. Spec hulls will be assigned to 12km and 24km distance racers. Spec and ultralight results will be calculated separately. Grid assignments/start positions may change on race days. Boat allocations will be confirmed on race day.

This exciting event is not just a race; it’s a fundraiser for men’s health, now going into its 16th year and having raised more than $100,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation. Even better, competitive advantages are available for teams through the “Make Every Second Count” Wetdashe Men’s Health Fund, managed by the BC Cancer Foundation. Competitors and supporters can help Wetdashe teams “make every second count.” This year’s 16th anniversary Wetdashe Challenge encourages racers to invite friends, family and team supporters to participate by contributing pledged donations to the BC Cancer Foundation. Donations “add speed” to teams’ results by reducing finish times based on donations received. For every $10 donated to the Wetdashe Men’s Health Fund, a 1-second advantage is added to the scores of chosen teams. Please join individual and cohort athletes and their supporting communities across BC to “make every second count” for men’s health. Contribution instructions for pledges and time credits (1 second per $10 dollars) will be provided to participants once their registrations are confirmed.

Money raised through supporters’ pledges is directed to the BC Cancer Agency’s research and clinical development of “PSMA prostate scanning technology,” an advanced prostate cancer diagnostic that results in better outcomes men affected by prostate cancer.
