CORA Lahaina Outrigger Recovery Fund

2023 saw catastrophic loss of life in the community of Lahaina on the island of Maui. This sister paddling community is slowly rebuilding, and CORA has spent the fall of 2023 forging a respectful and meaningful process to raise financial support for Lahaina paddling clubs affected by the 2023 firestorm. In partnership with HCRA (the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association), CORA has opened a GoFundMe page to raise funds from Canadian paddlers who wish to contribute directly to the restoration of outrigger programs and infrastructure in Lahaina. Any amount is meaningful, and we’ve set an achievable goal of $5000 CAD, which we hope to exceed with support from Canadian paddlers who can afford to contribute. Please give what you can, if you can, before 31 January 2024, at which point we will transfer 100% of the net amount raised to HCRA for distribution to the three affected paddling clubs. Please click here to contribute. We recognize that the Lahaina fires affected the people of Maui many months ago; but financial assistance from Canadian paddlers in 2024 is well-timed and will be appreciated now that recovery is underway.

The GoFundMe page will now remain open until the end of February, 2024.

Lotus IceBreaker V12 Race Postponed

The Lotus Race Committee has made the difficult decision to postpone this Saturday’s IceBreaker V12 Race to Saturday, February 17, 2024 due to forecasted freezing temperatures. Their main priority is to ensure the safety of competitors and volunteers; we have been monitoring the weather and, although not as low as originally predicted, the temperature will remain below zero and snow/ice may make road, path and stairway conditions unsafe.

CORA Membership Day Passes purchased for the Lotus IceBreaker race will automatically apply to the rescheduled date.

CORA Town Hall – Cold Water Safety – Sunday 21 January 2024 @ 4pm Pacific Time

Please join us at 4:00pm Pacific Time on Sunday, January 21st, 2024 for the first CORA Town Hall of the year when Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, aka Dr. Popsicle, will provide us with a special presentation on cold water safety.

Now retired, Dr. Giesbrecht, Ph.D., was a Professor of Thermophysiology in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, at the University of Manitoba where he operated the Laboratory for Exercise and Environmental Medicine and studied human responses to exercise and work in extreme environments. He has conducted hundreds of cold water immersion studies that have provided valuable information about cold stress physiology and pre-hospital care for human hypothermia. Dr. Giesbrecht has studied drowning physiology and prevention as well as prevention of vehicle submersion deaths. Other research interests include human physical and mental performance in other stresses such as altitude (hypoxia) and diving (hypobaria).

Dr. Giesbrecht was dubbed Professor Popsicle in a feature article in Outdoor Magazine in 2003, and has appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman” in 2004, “The Nature of Things with David Suzuki” (twice), and the “Rick Mercer Report” (three times). He has also been featured on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel and several National Network News Networks in both Canada and the US.
